Fruit smoothie sour beers are all the rage, but let’s be honest.  If you get a bad one, you’re drinking a glass of thick funk, which my wife refers to as ‘vomit beer’.  For every Drekker CHONK, there are five more smoothie beers that excite me and then ultimately leave me disappointed.  Luckily, the brewers at Humble Forager know just what it takes to make a smoothie sour shine.

First things first, this beer is THICK.  I’d recommend turning it upside-down for a couple minutes before the pour, and then gently rocking it back and forth before popping the can.  This will help evenly distribute the fruit puree and is especially useful when sharing.

Coastal Sunshine (v8) pours a murky, viscus dark orange, glugging out of the can like motor oil.  I was immediately hit with the aroma of moderate funk, followed by a burst of peaches and apricot.  The flavor was dominated by mango, which would have overpowered the brew, if it wasn’t for the hit of passion fruit right at the end.  Like a tropical, spiked fruit salad thrown in a blender, Coastal Sunshine is like a homemade fruit smoothie with a kick.

This beer is perfectly balanced, not too sweet and absolutely gorgeous in a glass.  As far as fruit smoothie sours go, this one is up there with the best.
